The Jonbarr Hinge on Myspace

The aforementioned Jonbarr Hinge are on Myspace now and they have some nice rehearsal demos up to listen to. For those who don't know, Jonbarr Hinge are a Croydon supergroup featuring members of KTD, The Wilderness Years and our personal hero, Ben Parker of Nosferatu D2, Tempertwig & Superman Revenge Squad fame.

This band is in their infancy (one gig, a tape recorder rehearsal so far) but they're already rocking my world. Those who just want to hear Ben 'Nosferatu D2' Parker play electric guitar again won't be disappointed, but you'll doubtlessly find a lot more to enjoy (mega harmonies, man!).

My favourite of their demos is 'AsBo Diddley', I think.

They have their second gig on July 17th at The Green Dragon in Croydon.

Audio Antihero & Benjamin Shaw takeover Propaganda Radio (29/06/10)!

Dear all,

Audio Antihero & Benjamin Shaw will be blasting across the digital airwaves on Tuesday the 29th of June with a special 'Audio Antihero Takeover' on Propaganda Radio.

You can listen to Propaganda Radio between 7 and 8pm on:
I'll be choosing all the music and BENJAMIN SHAW will be playing material new and old live in the studio.

PLUS, we've been given a demo from the upcoming SUPERMAN REVENGE SQUAD album 'Dead Crow Blues' which we'll be giving its first airing. It's a gorgeous song and it'll be worth your time just to hear that gem (plus we'll throw in a song from Ben Parker's previous band, NOSFERATU D2).*

It's the first time we've done anything like this, so expert nerves, mumbles and a general sense of fear - but we promise to BRING THE NOIZE**.

Tune-in: 7pm, Tuesday the 29th of June!

P.S Pearl Jam were terrific at Hyde Park on Friday, although I could have done without the loutish men and breast flashing ladies...

* Andy & Jamie who host Propaganda Radio used to host Ear Wax Radio and did a nice session with Superman Revenge Squad way back in the day - you can hear that here: http://www.podcastdirectory.com/podshows/2806886. They were also the first station to play anything from Benjamin Shaw & Nosferatu D2 on the release of the two albums. We thank them.

** We will not be playing Public Enemy or Anthrax. Sorry.

The Jonbarr Hinge @ Scream Lounge, Croydon (11/06/2010)

This isn't so much a review (lord knows I'm awful at them), but just a quick note to say that The Jonbarr Hinge gig I've been going on about for the last week or so was really good.

The obvious attraction for me was that Ben "Indie Royalty" Parker of Nosferatu D2, Superman Revenge Squad AND Tempertwig infamy is part of the trio, but the whole thing was a treat.

Naturally his contributions were my favourite bits ("Asbo Diddley" being a real highlight) and seeing him play standing up with an electric guitar again got me to fanboy up a bit (reminded me of seeing Nosferatu D2 just up the road at The Ship in 2006), but it was hardly a one man show. Sam of The Wilderness Years (making an apparently welcome return to the stage after six years) is the group's principal songwriter and shrieker and carries a passionate tune very well and brings an emotive undercurrent Parker's more apathetic delivery (example: there was a song about how he was disappointed, but didn't really care...) and a Mr Feezel (of the really good KTD) can be credited with some really dynamic rhythms, excellent harmonies and some truly innovative facial expressions.

Despite what original sources said, they sounded nothing like The Afghan Whigs, but they did sound like something good. They're well worth seeing if you get the chance, and presumably will only get better with more stage time together.

I was really tired and hungry, so I didn't stay to listen to The Junkyard Choir, but a brief google and listen to them has told me that I really should have stuck around. You can eat/sleep when you're dead, but you need to be awake to rock out. Also recommended.

P.S I hope no one thought that was a review...I hate writing reviews.

Two Exciting Gigs or: Return Of The Mack

Dear people of criminally good taste,

As all our millions of Songkick followers already know, there's two exciting gigs coming up, and seeing as we're not at all a lazy or apathetic generation of broadbandbangers, you'll all totally want to come to both.

FIRST:

THE RETURN OF THE MACK. Yes. Ben "the uncrowned king of awesome" Parker of Nosferatu D2 & Superman Revenge Squad fame is playing ELECTRIC guitar for a new band called The Jonbar Hinge. I have not heard them, no one has, BUT Ben Parker sings a song or two and has claimed it to sound 'a bit like The Afghan Whigs' (exclusive!). So it'll be lovely.

They're playing their first gig in Croydon (where else?) at The Scream Lounge on friday the 11th of June:
Facebook event - HERE.
Songkick listing - HERE.

SECOND:

On June 17th, Benjamin "Don't call me 'Pal'!" Shaw will be opening Dexter Bentley's (Resonance FM) Acoustic Suicide show at The Gladstone, and it's free. Benjamin Shaw rocks, as does Resonance FM, and so does suicide as any fourteen year old rock music fan will tell you. So do come.
Facebook event - HERE.
Songkick listing - HERE.

I might be shameless and wear my official Nosferatu D2 & Benjamin Shaw t-shirts to each respectively. If you want to do the same go to the Audio Antihero Webshop.

The Owl Service - The View From A Hill (a correction)

Last week I blogged in more detail about the great second album from The Owl Service (read HERE) and how you should all go out and buy it with the new Meursault album on the 31st of May, but I was wrong. Following a week's delay in its release, you'll have to go out this monday coming to buy it instead.

It's well worth it, my copy came yesterday, it looks gorgeous and sounds even better. Plus the detailed liner notes about each song are just wonderful.

Anyway, sorry for the misinformation, and better late than never, eh?

Get it direct from the label: Rif Mountain
Get it off Amazon - here
Or go to a record shop (always better)

For those who don't have tickets to see Rage Against The Machine...

Obviously a lot of us are quite giddy about sticking it to the man and rocking out with RATM, but many of us couldn't be squeezed into Finsbury Park on what promises to be a very rainy day indeed, so if anyone is trying to occupy their Sunday Eve, I have a tip.

Meursault's new album (as mentioned recently on this blog) is getting its London launch tomorrow (Sunday the 6th) at The Old Queen's Head in Islington - more info HERE.

Meursault are a fine band, and London trips from these Edinburgh glory boys are a rare treat. I rather wish I could be there.

Give them a listen here: Meursault Myspace
Order the album here: Physical / Digital
