So have a listen at their myspace: THE JONBARR HINGE!

"Occams Razor" is the one we'd recommend if you've only got time for one (but if that's the case, why so busy, buddy?).

While you're here, the Nosferatu D2 album & t-shirt are both available from our SHOPALOPOLIS!

Rock on guys,

Charity Compilation: Playing For Pakistan

Listen up party people,

For a teency £5 you can do the right thing and rock the hell out while you do.

A charity compilation featuring Shoes & Socks Off, Shield Your Eyes, Tubelord, Internet Forever and many more. It's £5 and it's terrific.

The compilation was put together by the lovely Fractions Of One site who were kind enough to feature our Benjamin Shaw once doing a feature on one of his favourite albums - Under The Influence. They even called him "an alternative idol in waiting" which was pretty cool of them. We were always pleased with the feature but we're especially pleased now to have been in any way associated with a super cool site that does lovely things for fun. Traveling the web and doing good.

Charity music may reek of 'feeeeed thaaaaa woooooo-orrrrrlllld' but there's no doubting the quality and credentials of this record. Some of my favourite minds in modern British music are featured and I've been exposed to some more terrific racket that I'd gladly have paid a fiver for, regardless of the good deed attached.

Highly highly highly recommended.

Audio Antihero's "Folk On, Kids!"

Hello all,

This week we're leaving yee olde "Never Say DIY!" Radio behind and have put together our first (and probably last) genre specific show "Folk On, Kids!"

With heaps happening in the folk revival we thought we'd throw our hats in the ring and share some of our favourites too. We're not veterans of the genre but perhaps our rookie assessment will work for other newcomers to this wonderful style of music.

The Owl Service will be playing at Rough Trade East on 16/08/2010 for the launch of the new Rough Trade "Pysch Folk 10" compilation

Benjamin Shaw, Tom Paley & Jason Steel will be playing at Cecil Sharp House (Folk's Death Star) on 09/09/10

Audio Antihero's "Never Say DIY!" Radio Vol.5!

It is of course that time again...

Songs:
1. Planes Mistaken For Stars - Copper & Stars
I remember first hearing this when I was 15 and telling everyone 'dudes! it's like totally the best song ever!' and their response was 'dude! it's like totally well shit' - but I stand by my claim (more or less). Really wonderful rock music. COPPER AND STAAAAAAAAAARS!
2. Mclusky - To Hell With Good Intentions
Any time this song is played is anywhere in the world, Mclusky factually become the best band on the planet (defunct or not) for the duration. EXCELLENT.
3. Marvin Gaye - What's Happening Brother?
Oh Marvin...you beautiful man.
4. Runaround Kids - Into the Gulch
Early work from these rising alt. rock kids. Bassist Jack Winn is a class act. I'd say 'try to catch them soon' but by the looks of things it'll be pretty hard to miss them!
5. Forest Fire - Fortune Teller
Is the rest of their album this good? Someone please tell me. This is a digital single well worth getting.
6. Girls In The Eighties - Yesterday's Don't Mean Shit
I'm falling quickly in love with these Noisy Nashville Nuisances. Lovely stuff and I've big hopes...
7. Amateurs - Alfred Garyevich Schnittke
Rocking supergroup. They're in their infancy but this already very unique and intriguing rock music.
8. Tempertwig - Everything Can Be Derailed
My favourite of the slew of songs recorded by the trio featuring Ben Parker & Adam Parker (aka NOSFERATU D2!) in their brief span. This is gorgeous music that would only be bettered by what they went on to do next.
9. Benjamin Shaw - Hello Sunshine (Super Furry Animals Cover)
In Vol.4 of "Never Say DIY!" Radio we featured his excellent version of Pavement's "Starlings Of The Slipstream" and this time we're for his fuzzed out and buzzed off version of the SFA favourite. Originally recorded to celebrate the 5th anniversary of the lovely Sweeping The Nation blog.

Listen and tell your sucker friends, yo.

I went to another festival: The Big Chill non-review

I had a lovely time at Big Chill Festival this weekend. Rock on.

Very tired (woke up at 5!) so keeping it brief.

In brief:

Massive Attack - shockingly good, as the most casual of fan I was blown away.
Thom Yorke - is 99% fair trade beauty. 1% stubble. He's absolutely excellent.
Explosions In The Sky - really good and very sweet. They can come again.
Mike Patton's Mondo Cane - Mike Patton is the freaking man and I got right to the front. This was maniacal genius, it made me so insanely happy. My total hero.
Chrome Hoof - finally saw these mad dogs and wasn't at all disappointed. Bangin'! AND I had no idea that Chan from Invasion did their backing vocals. She's awesome too.

I saw lots of other cool things scattered around and had some very good burritos - but I'm sleepy. Ultimately, I had a really awesome time and would totally go again.

They did a beautiful job of doing the whole place up, it was like an imaginary world!

Typically, naked people got in my way on a Sunday morning, but that's par for the course when you're Jamie fucking Halliday.

P.S I was really sad to only get there in time for Hope Sandoval & The Warm Invention's last song, but it totally wasn't our fault.

Audio Antihero's "Never Say DIY!" Radio Vol.4!

Here we go with Audio Antihero's "Never Say DIY!" Radio Vol.4!

Vaguely delayed by a sudden blast of a social life and yesterday's excellent SeeSound All-Dayer (non-reviewed HERE). Worth the wait though, yeah?

Stream below:

Featuring:

1. Dum Dum Girls - It Only Takes One Night (Sub Pop)
I saw them on the main stage at The 1234 Shoredtich Festival last weekend (non-reviewed HERE), bought their album and haven't really stopped listening to them since. Lovely.

2. Von Haze - Sad Girls (Hippos In Tanks)
Also seen at 1234 Shoreditch Festival (on the Rough Trade stage) were New Yawk's Von Haze, I remember hating them until I suddenly loved them. I've since bought their EP twice (on vinyl first, then I lost access to my deck and had to buy it digitally too, just to listen to it) and their Sad Girls 7' single (£1 from Pure Groove!). This is a corker.

3. Life Without Buildings - The Leanover (Tugboat)
They're very obnoxious, but there's such a wonderful flow and spontaneity to their sound. "The Leanover" is my absolute favourite from them. If I recall, I got into them from a recommendation on the Nosferatu D2 Myspace page, way back in the day. Such a shame this album is out of print.

4. Benjamin Shaw - Starlings Of The Slipstream (Filthy Little Angels)
Benjamin Shaw making worm food out my favourite Pavement song. A wonderful buzzing beast of a tribute. This is available on the free Pavement tribute album from Filthy Little Angels. Benjamin Shaw's EP & T-shirt are available to buy from the Audio Antihero webshop.

5. The Blueprint - Out Of The Black (Copro)
Impassioned hardcore/metal from Karl Middleton's (Earthtone9) supergroup. I've loved this song since I was 17 or so. Dunno if you fancy indie kids will agree though? If anyone actually listened to the 'show', I'd say it might cost me listeners!

6. Nosferatu D2 - A Man At War With Himself (Audio Antihero, sort of)
Non-LP track from our heroes in Nosferatu D2. The fact that this didn't make the album kind of shows just how good they were! You can order their album and T-shirt from the Audio Antihero webshop and you can download a live version of this from our media page where we're giving away a good quality bootleg of them supporting Los Campesinos! and Sky Larkin.

7. Isaac Hayes - Precious, Precious (Stax)
Nice bit of jazzy improv from a debuting Isaac Hayes (well, debuting as a proper solo artist, his musical history goes a lot further back), my favourite soul man . This was right before he peaked and long before he lost it completely. RIP Mr Hayes, your work at Stax will not be forgotten.

8. Tall Ships - Vessels (Big Scary Monsters)
I saw these guys opening for Danananananayroyd at The Lexington recently. They seemed darned impressive and this song was by far the best of the bunch. Days later I owned their EP and their t-shirt and "Vessels" is still a very life affirming journey of a song.

9. JJ72 - Bumble Bee (Lakota)
I don't imagine many people will thank me for this one, but I think the JJ72 *really* nailed it with this one. Beautiful and soul shaking.

10. Fear Of Pop (Featuring William Shatner) - Still In Love (Epic)
Partner piece to Fear of Pop's "In Love" (for my money, genuinely the best song ever written). A lovely way to fade out. Love you Ben Folds, love you Bill Shatner.

So, thanks again for 'tuning in' do subscribe and tell your friends. We love to rock.
