By some miracle we've kept on going to the 10th volume of Audio Antihero's "Never Say DIY! Radio" - thank you and your balls of brass/bosoms of bronze for sticking with us.
It's our typical mix of old favourites, young pretenders and shameless self promotion:
Playlist:
1. Herbie Hancock - Death Wish Theme
Probably quite an indulgent opener...the supercool theme from the 1974 Republican Cinema classic DEATH WISH. "Fill your hand..."
2. Nosferatu D2 - The Mojo Top 100
One of many reasons that Mojo ignore all the promo packages I send them. This is Nosferatu D2 at their pop monologue spitting best. I actually really like Phil Collins though. 'Face Value' is great, though maybe a little bit White Moses. Buy Nosferatu D2's album & T-shirt HERE.
3. Johnny Foreigner - Salt, Pepa & Spinderella
Despite me holding a pretty strong prejudice against emotional new music for a very longtime, I am wondering if 'Waited Up Til It Was Light' might be one of my favourite albums ever. TURN ON THE REAL DRUMS...
4. Bellafea - Artic
One of my favourite artists on one of my favourite labels. Bellafea are perhaps the most emotive and soul scorching signing Southern Records has had since the days of Karate (the band, the martial art is alive and well).
5. Oceansize - Ransoms
I saw Oceansize once supporting the ghost of The Smashing Pumpkins and they were great. Despite buying the lovely 'Effloresce', I pretty much forgot about them after that (doh) but the new album is darned impressive. One hopes it'll give them a bit more of what they deserve. This is a littler lighter than the rest of the album but carries a lot more weight in the heart, in my opinion. I blushed when I realised what their album cover was though...
6. The Straw Bear Band - Migraine Season
Dom Cooper (also of The Owl Service) has one of the great young voices in folk music and The Straw Bear Band have a LOT to offer. They've an album and a 7 inch single available now from RIF Mountain (who happen to be the future) - SHOP. Admittedly this doesn't sound very folky...but more power to them, this is great.
7. Still Corners - Endless Summer
After a fine EP and two terrific singles Still Corners are surely bright hopes of London. Ethereal and beautiful, reminds me a little of Mazzy Star but perhaps infinitely more from the heart. They're going to be really popular. Fact.
8. The Screenbeats - Hanging On
My personal favourite from the recent Barely Regal compilation (available HERE), The Screenbeats do everything right with a style of rock that can so easily go wrong. Perfect for what it is and what it is is awesome. They're playing in London on October 15th at The Rhythm Factory - I'm going. If they don't play this and 'Super 8' I will riot.
9. Berkeley - New Heavy
You know, I'm pretty sure these guys split up about three years ago. Which is horrible. I haven't seen them announce it though, so I might just ignore it, like when your girlfriend/boyfriend is almost definitely cheating on you but you just pretend she/he has no credit.
I used to joke that they were one of only four Irish bands behind U2, The Corrs and The Commitments...but that's obviously neither true or funny. I think this was recorded by Steve Albini. It meant the world to me when I was younger and it still rocks like a mountain.
10. The Scottish Enlightenment - Drip Feed
Lovely ditty from 'THE FUTURE OF ALTERNATIVE AWESOME' The Scottish Enlightenment. This is pulled from their lovely 'Little Sleep' EP (available HERE). They often rock harder than this but this is what you're getting.
11. Colour Of Fire - The Company Won't Colour Me
HAS THERE EVER BEEN A BETTER WAY TO END A SHOW?! I saw Colour Of Fire opening for Placebo (back when they didn't hate their audiences) and they're one of the few bands to stay with me from the days when I thought Oasis were a really great band. I miss Colour Of Fire. Fuck Work! Let's Party!
Thanks for listening & Never Say DIY!
