Audio Antihero's "Never Say DIY! Radio" Vol.10

By some miracle we've kept on going to the 10th volume of Audio Antihero's "Never Say DIY! Radio" - thank you and your balls of brass/bosoms of bronze for sticking with us.

It's our typical mix of old favourites, young pretenders and shameless self promotion:

Playlist:

1. Herbie Hancock - Death Wish Theme

Probably quite an indulgent opener...the supercool theme from the 1974 Republican Cinema classic DEATH WISH. "Fill your hand..."

2. Nosferatu D2 - The Mojo Top 100

One of many reasons that Mojo ignore all the promo packages I send them. This is Nosferatu D2 at their pop monologue spitting best. I actually really like Phil Collins though. 'Face Value' is great, though maybe a little bit White Moses. Buy Nosferatu D2's album & T-shirt HERE.

3. Johnny Foreigner - Salt, Pepa & Spinderella

Despite me holding a pretty strong prejudice against emotional new music for a very longtime, I am wondering if 'Waited Up Til It Was Light' might be one of my favourite albums ever. TURN ON THE REAL DRUMS...

4. Bellafea - Artic

One of my favourite artists on one of my favourite labels. Bellafea are perhaps the most emotive and soul scorching signing Southern Records has had since the days of Karate (the band, the martial art is alive and well).

5. Oceansize - Ransoms

I saw Oceansize once supporting the ghost of The Smashing Pumpkins and they were great. Despite buying the lovely 'Effloresce', I pretty much forgot about them after that (doh) but the new album is darned impressive. One hopes it'll give them a bit more of what they deserve. This is a littler lighter than the rest of the album but carries a lot more weight in the heart, in my opinion. I blushed when I realised what their album cover was though...

6. The Straw Bear Band - Migraine Season

Dom Cooper (also of The Owl Service) has one of the great young voices in folk music and The Straw Bear Band have a LOT to offer. They've an album and a 7 inch single available now from RIF Mountain (who happen to be the future) - SHOP. Admittedly this doesn't sound very folky...but more power to them, this is great.

7. Still Corners - Endless Summer

After a fine EP and two terrific singles Still Corners are surely bright hopes of London. Ethereal and beautiful, reminds me a little of Mazzy Star but perhaps infinitely more from the heart. They're going to be really popular. Fact.

8. The Screenbeats - Hanging On

My personal favourite from the recent Barely Regal compilation (available HERE), The Screenbeats do everything right with a style of rock that can so easily go wrong. Perfect for what it is and what it is is awesome. They're playing in London on October 15th at The Rhythm Factory - I'm going. If they don't play this and 'Super 8' I will riot.

9. Berkeley - New Heavy

You know, I'm pretty sure these guys split up about three years ago. Which is horrible. I haven't seen them announce it though, so I might just ignore it, like when your girlfriend/boyfriend is almost definitely cheating on you but you just pretend she/he has no credit.

I used to joke that they were one of only four Irish bands behind U2, The Corrs and The Commitments...but that's obviously neither true or funny. I think this was recorded by Steve Albini. It meant the world to me when I was younger and it still rocks like a mountain.

Lovely ditty from 'THE FUTURE OF ALTERNATIVE AWESOME' The Scottish Enlightenment. This is pulled from their lovely 'Little Sleep' EP (available HERE). They often rock harder than this but this is what you're getting.

11. Colour Of Fire - The Company Won't Colour Me

HAS THERE EVER BEEN A BETTER WAY TO END A SHOW?! I saw Colour Of Fire opening for Placebo (back when they didn't hate their audiences) and they're one of the few bands to stay with me from the days when I thought Oasis were a really great band. I miss Colour Of Fire. Fuck Work! Let's Party!

Thanks for listening & Never Say DIY!

Ben "Nosferatu D2" Parker's Superman Revenge Squad unveil new music video for DEAD CROW BLUES

From the upcoming "Dead Crow Blues" EP. Available October 18th on RecordsRecordsRecords.

Since the tragic break up of Nosferatu D2 Ben Parker has played beautifully in his Superman Revenge Squad project. Originally a solo outfit, Ben has recently added a Mr. Martin. Martin is a very fine cellist.

I think it's going to be perfect music.

In the meantime, you can order the Nosferatu D2 album & T-shirt from Bandcamp / Amazon / Our webshop (+ a host of others linked within).

A final note, Ben Parker will be playing with The Jonbarr Hinge on October 16th at SeeSound Saturday on Denmark Street.

Audio Antihero's "Never Say DIY! Radio" Vol.9

NEVER SAY DIY! Back from the grave! A RAVE FROM THE GRAVE!

After Benjamin Shaw's bloody lovely mix for our new "Hired Gun Radio" series (Ben Parker of Nosferatu D2/Superman Revenge Squad has an installment coming soon too) which happened to be our most "popular" podcast so far, Audio Antihero's "Never Say DIY! Radio" has made its much unrequested return with Vol.9.

The music contained as ever is an awkward mix decade hopping alternative awesomity. Don't let the Bruce Springsteen scare you, it will touch your soul (and he's quite frequently the best on the planet).

The Nosferatu D2 & Benjamin Shaw songs are available on their respective Audio Antihero releases, available from:
http://audioantihero.com/Shop.htm or a bit cheaper digitally from: http://audioantihero.bandcamp.com (but the CDs are prettier, Benjamin Shaw's in particular is a visual delight).

Playlist:

1. Benjamin Shaw - Thanks For All The Biscuits

Our very own Benjamin Shaw compiled last week's podcast (Hired Gun Radio) and modestly neglected to include any of his own music in there. So, this week's opens with his lovely 'Thanks For All The Biscuits'. This is available as a free MP3 from Audio Antihero.com - HERE. Order his EP & T-shirt from Bandcamp.

2. Sex Bob-Omb - We Are Sex Bob-Omb

I feel a bit funny about including a song from a fictitious band from a film still currently in the cinema, but I love Sex Bob-Omb. They're here to make you think about death and get sad and stuff.

3. Hira Hira - Mouth Full Of Calves Blood

On the recommendation of the Archelon's Gravity blog. I dig these Sydney thrashers, man.

4. Japandroids - Heavenward Grand Prix

I have literally no idea how good their next album is going to be. I'm actually a bit intimidated. These singles have been SO good.

5. The Alligators - OHOHOH

More infectiously lovely racket from our heroes at I Blame The Parents Records (Docksud/Extradition Order/The Outdoor Types).

6. Nosferatu D2 - Flying Things & Pests

An old classic from the men in black. Album & T-shirt available from Bandcamp.

7. Kierononononon^ - No One Laughed

I cut my teeth in this crazy biz as a whipping boy for Kieronononon's roxXOR2 label. I love them to death.

8. Mogwai - R U Still In 2 It

Pretty much my entire family is Scottish. None of them are this interesting. Nor am I, mind.

9. Bruce Springsteen - The Fever

Bruce Springsteen is one of the greatest of all time. This song being a bit of a cheeky incentive bonus track on the '18 Tracks Compilation', it alluded me for awhile. But it's magic, it's worth paying a full album price for.

Two awesome albums from bands who are old enough to know better

Age Against The Machine, man.

There is a popular theory that bands and artists get too old to be awesome. On a week where I've seen Tom Jones strutting his stuff live, I can say this isn't true.

But more to the hipster point, there's two quite new albums out that you should own:

GRINDERMAN - GRINDERMAN 2

Nick Cave is persistently the man. This isn't necessarily the best thing he's done at all but having albums of this quality casually appear in our lifetime should make us smile. I'm seeing Grinderman twice in two days. I am periodically the man.

The Vaselines - Sex With An X

They're Scotch. They're signed to Sub Pop. These are both good things. What's quite inexplicable is that this, their second album, is probably better than their 1990 debut 'Dum Dum'. I'm seeing them on Wednesday too. I'm a bit late to dance so I'll feel a bit like a poser but such is the life of a neurotic hunk with more integrity than blackheads.

Product placement, baby. Without affiliate links.

Superman Revenge Squad - "Dead Crow Blues" E.P released October 18th

Ben "Nosferatu D2" Parker's awesome Superman Revenge Squad are f-f-f-f-f-finally releasing their "Dead Crow Blues" EP.
Info taken from Superman Revenge Squad.com:

"Dead Crow Blues now has a release date of 18th October. It's being released by Records Records Records records. And it'll feature these songs: 1. Fairweather Friends. 2. The Summer We Finally Cut Our Hair. 3. An Old Man Flicking Through a Pornographic Magazine. 4.Yeah, This House is Haunted. 5. Playing God Games. 6. An Endless Bottle of Blood Red Wine... Whistling into the Abyss. 7. Dead Crow Blues... And it will have a cover that's been done by Dave Broadbent (the rather talented artist that previously did the Nosferatu D2 album's artwork, and that's currently doing the artwork for my graphic novel)."

Fans of Mr Dave Broadbent's gorgeous work can also get his designs of the Nosferatu D2 album & t-shirt. But seriously, the cover for this EP is breathtaking...

We love Ben Parker.

Oh and side note: Fans of Ben Parker can see him playing in Jonbarr Hinge at their first ever non-croydon gig for the next SeeSound Saturday on Denmark Street on October 16th: CLICK HERE TO SEE FLYER.

Hired Gun Radio: Benjamin Shaw's Guest Podcast & Words

Audio Antihero's own Benjamin Shaw took time out of his busy schedule of making racket, loathing audiences and confusing journalists to produce a very delicate (though characteristically fuzzy) mix for us.

Learn more about Benjamin Shaw at:
Order his "I Got the Pox, the Pox is What I Got" EP & gruesome T-shirt from:

Benjamin Shaw's Playlist, in his own grumbling words:

Fighting Kites – Antony Gankin
Fighting Kites are my favourite London band. This is from an early EP that is available for free from www.last.fm/music/fighting+kites. Neil from the band tells me they have a record due out on the equally wonderful Gravid Hands label later this year, but I have yet to see any proof of this. I'm just glad they're better songers than they are liars.

Lessons in Time – An Invitation
This is possibly my favourite thing to come out of Australia. After my wife, obv. Again, this is taken from a free EP available from lessonsintime.bandcamp.com. At 19, this feller is too young to be so impressive. It would be depressing if it wasn't so beautiful. In fact, yes, it is depressing.

Me and the Horse I Rode in on - Don't Let the Pigeons Scare You
Henry, a Danish man I know from the internet, and an integral part of the hi54lofirecords.com community, is behind this. I quite often wish I had the knack for production like this man does , and to be honest, this instrumental piano tune doesn't do him or his finely observed, sleepy love songs any justice at all. But! To continue the trend, the EP this song is from, is available for free at meandthehorseirodeinon.bandcamp.com so please do do it.

Jack Hayter – Cutty Sark
Jack Hayter was once the silent guitarist in my favourite big little band, Hefner. Many a lonely, youthful night did I spend wallowing in their rather fruity songs of miserable hope. Who knew that Jack's songs would give me such a thrill all these gazillions of years later?

Frank Sinatra – Only the Lonely
This is the title track of something obscenely brilliant. If someone could get me it on vinyl, it would be very much appreciated.

The Greasers - Remember the Words
This is possibly also my favourite thing to come out of Australia. Again, after the wife. Dominic, the Greasers' singer, was one of seven people at our wedding, and has since become unnaturally popular in Australia with the canny Little Red. In his significantly less popular Greasers band though, he is much more as I remember him – heartfelt, awkward and utterly special. (Whole album FREE at last.fm/music/the+greasers)

Joseph McNulty – Sunday
I don't know how I found this, at all, but I'm so glad I did. I got the album 'Week' from A Beard of Snails Records, and have massively fallen for this New Yorker. Annoyingly prolific and ruthless in noise and love of melody, I don't know if Joe can do any wrong for me.

The Verlaines – Don't Send Me Away
When I mentioned this ancient New Zealand band to a kiwi feller I work with, he didn't know who they were. It made me feel smug. And rightly so. Their debut 'Hallelujah All The Way Home' and its tasty label Flying Nun, always, without fail, make me want to have the otherwise ridiculous wish of living in New Zealand as a teenager in the 80s. That is all.

That was Mr Benjamin Shaw, in his own words.

The Rhubarb Bomb's Nosferatu D2 Retrospective

The following article was written by Jack Winn and was lovingly published in Wakefield based A5 zine "The Rhubarb Bomb" - look them up.

Lost Bands - Nosferatu D2

"‘The only place I feel alone is in your arms’, Ben Parker pretty much screams at the start of Broken Tamagotchi, the first track on ‘We're gonna walk around this city with our headphones on to block out the noise‘. It sets the tone for an album that rips into his city, his own confidence, Christmas, Thom Yorke, Phil Collins, the devil, McDonalds and KFC. The guitars sound wrecked, the drums beaten to death, the singer distraught. Two and a half minutes later and it’s over. It makes you feel bad in the best possible way.

Nosferatu D2 are a band from Croydon, formed by brothers and former Tempertwig members Ben and Adam Parker. They lasted two years, playing a mere 18 gigs in their lifetime, the last of which with pre-fame Los Campesinos! and Sky Larkin. A collection of tracks they had recorded themselves were shelved after their breakup, and the plans for an album release scrapped, almost never seeing the light of day. The brothers had agreed that they would stop playing if it didn’t feel right, and something must’ve not felt right at that gig (though you’d never be able to tell from the bootleg. Nicely put by a man at the end of the last song ‘That was fucking awesome!’). Tragically, they stuck to their word and that was the last show they ever played. Though their humbleness has to be commended, it’s a loss for the latecomers like myself. Ben has said since that the angry persona he had in Nosferatu D2 became tired, and songs such as Idiot Food and The Angriest Dog In The World became solo songs.

They almost disappeared from the face of the earth with nothing more than that handful of shows and a shelved album. This was the case for two years, until a heart-warmingly enthusiastic fan, Jamie Halliday, decided that if no-one else would release it, he would. After months of saving, he set up the label Audio Antihero, and with no financial backing and safe in the knowledge that there was no way the band could promote it, he gave the record it’s belated, deserved release. I got mine for six pounds, with a handwritten thank you note. ‘I just couldn’t find anyone that meant as much to me as Nosferatu D2’, he said in an interview. It’s an incredible feat of will that he was so, so determined that people had to hear this record. Yes it’s reckless and he’s probably going to get nothing but a bit of gratitude from messageboards and indie kids, but music needs people like him.

The album itself is a masterpiece. Remastered from the original recordings by Adam, who recorded them the first time round. There is nothing more than a clean guitar, a drum kit and a voice. The words come at you faster than your poor ears can deal with, but every word is spiked with some incredible anger. The words are what really make this record for me. ‘It’s easy to care about people who fall apart’, ‘I’ve got the voice of God, the body of the devil’. The drumming seems uncontrollable but compliments the writing illogically well, in ways it shouldn‘t work but just do.

The record ends with one of my favourite songs of last year, though obviously not written then, ‘It’s Christmas Time (For God’s Sake’). Given that this is out in August, it’s probably not the best time to be talking about it, but the lyrics are perfect for the Christmas hating bastard in everyone.

Though this is the only recorded evidence of Nosferatu D2, there’s a huge amount of music that they have made separately and together. Tempertwig have their self titled album available as a free download from last.fm. There’s a surprisingly high quality bootleg of their last show, including unreleased personal favourite ‘Man At War With Himself‘, and Audio Antihero have downloads of rare tracks such as ‘The Kids From Fame’. Ben has three albums under the name ‘Superman Revenge Squad’ that are £2.50 plus 50p postage, which is bloody unbelievable. Ben’s also recently started playing in a band called The Jonbarr Hinge, and Adam plays in a math rock band that are without a name, making it difficult to find them. The Nosferatu D2 album is six pounds and the best album released last year."

Isn't it lovely?

The Rhubarb Bomb can be picked up all over the place up North, just keep your eyes peeled.

Jack Winn also plays in a fine band of youngsters called The Runaround Kids. Most recently seen playing the Introducing Stage at the Reading & Leeds festivals this year. They've very recently released an excellent Double A-Side single entitled "No Dreams / Falling Into Better Hands" on Philophobia Music, a label that supports local music better than we could ever dream of.

Audio Antihero's "Never Say DIY!" Radio Vol.8!

It's Sunday. Get out of Church and rock out with your new Gods at Audio Antihero!

Here's another mix of rock, soul, folk-blues insanity. I'm quite pleased with it.

Playlist:

1. Nosferatu D2 - Broken Tamagotchi
Audio Antihero's own golden goose. This is the opener to their tooth splitting debut album, available now from: http://audioantihero.com/Shop.htm

2. Docksud - Take Me To The Core Of Myself
Classics can be big and small. Docksud are a much missed band. Their sole release is available from I Blame The Parents on white vinyl (with download codes): http://www.iblametheparentsrecords.com/ShopPg.htm

3. Djevara - The Death Of Cliff Richard
When I was 13 and commercial rap metal was as its peak, Djevara inspired me to Never Say DIY! They still do. One feels that rocking this hard is perhaps a little unfashionable these days but we couldn't care less on this side of the screen.

4. Guns Or Knives - I Can't Imagine
Stef from the incendiary Shield Your Eyes has started up an equally throat shredding and soul baring blues-roots solo project. His debut album is available now - HERE. If you like to try before you buy - there's a free live EP available from: http://onlineantihero.blogspot.com/2010/09/free-ep-from-guns-or-knives-stef-from.html

5. Rollins Band - On My Way To The Cage
I couldn't resist showing the uninitiated what a rock monster Henry Rollins truly is. "On My Way To The Cage, I'm Larger Than Life & Laughing At Death!" - awesome.

6. Isaac Hayes - Good Love
Certainly not the best song Black Moses has recorded for Stax - but it's the definition of a musical romp. We'll always miss 'Ike The Ripper!'

7. Jimmy Eat World - Your New Aesthetic
I've always loved Jimmy Eat World and while I think 'Bleed American' is a classic of its genre, it's great hearing songs from the 'Clarity' days. Low-fat beauty. I'm super excited about seeing them in November with Minus The Bear.

8. Jeff Buckley & Elizabeth Fraser - All Flowers In Time
Commercially unavailable this collaboration between Jeff "The best voice of '90s?" Buckley and Elizabeth 'Cocteau Twins' Fraser is much too beautiful to go unheard by anyone.

9. Neil Young & Crazy Horse - Cortez The Killer
This song means the world to me, pleased to finally have included it in one of these. It should really open and close every single one of them.

Thanks for listening,
Jamie - Audio Antihero: Specialists in Commercial Suicide

Benjamin Shaw supports Tom Paley @ Cecil Sharp House 09/09/2010 (Time Out Approved!)

Dear all,

Our beloved Benjamin Shaw will be opening for Tom Paley (of The New Lost City Ramblers) alongside cheekychappy superstar Jason Steel and new Rif Mountain signing The Honeygales. This event will take place Cecil Sharp House (near Camden Underground Station) on Thursday the 9th of September.

2 Regents Park Road
NW1 7AY
London, UK

It'd be lovely to see any of you there. Oddly, Time Out recommended it - proof! One suspects we won't be hearing from them again!

Press for Benjamin Shaw's debut EP "I Got the Pox, the Pox is What I Got":

"Quite beautiful." - Subba Cultcha

"Fastidiously DIY in sound...A ‘name’ for 2010." - God is in The TV

"Underground notoriety beckons - 8/10." - Rock Pulse

Up there with the best of this year...on the 'to watch' list for 2010 - 8/10." - The Music Fix

"An alterative idol in waiting..." - Fractions Of One

"Defiantly ramshackle. The only fear is that Shaw's style may fail to attract the attention it deserves." - The Skinny

"A 'singer-songwriter' who obviously isn't happy with the connotations that tag would bestow upon him. He's fighting to find his own voice in a sea of tepid waters soiled by the likes of Jame's Morrison and Blunt." - Tasty Fanzine.org.uk

“Benjamin Shaw had a few more surprises tucked away than I first thought. I would definitely love to hear more. CD of the week.” – Nic Dalton (The Lemonheads), Half a Cow.com.au

"Pools of buzzing synths, effects and distorted cries. Like a nightmare Mark Linkous may even have rejected from ‘It’s a Wonderful Life’ for being a little too ‘ominous’." - Americana UK

"His lyrics are delivered flat so they stick in your soul like a stake...dangerous but completely seductive. Benjamin Shaw is a one-man wall in a dark alleyway of sound, and I’ll be looking out for him. 9/10." - Music Emissions

"Benjamin vocal's are very distinct and a whole host of adjectives can be used to try and describe them but it's almost impossible to do so - 4/5." - Tracks Monkey

"Defiantly lo-fi values cloak soul baring singer-songwriterliness as if essayed at the end of a very long and uncomfortably active night, throwing everything off course with electronic layers, noises and the inscrutability of his lyrical worldview." - Sweeping The Nation

Free EP from Guns Or Knives (Stef from Shield Your Eyes)

The friendly man known as Stef of Shield Your Eyes fame has started his bright light beckoning solo career under the guise of GUNS OR KNIVES!

His debut album (his only previous solo release to my knowledge was a 46 second thumper on a split 7 inch awhile ago) is entitled "Can't beat him Can't join him" and available now on Gravid Hands - Order HERE.

The album is a real thing of beauty. One of my most intense dislikes is crusty, impotent, whiteboy blues - but this is anything but that. It's shrieking blues lunacy and bitter beauty. "I Can't Imagine" chills me to the frickin' bone, it's literally exhausting.

ANYWAY, Guns Or Knives hath made a free Live EP available for your download pleasure:

The live EP is really great but I recommend getting the album AND whilst you're doing that, you can pre-order the new Shield Your Eyes album which will be good too.
